The continental climate prevails for the most part of huge landscapes of Russia. Cold winter, fairly hot summer, short off-seasons and moderate rainfalls are characteristic differences of the russian climate. The best time for travelling in Russia is the period from May to September. However, in winter, when there is lots of snow in Russia and it is beautiful there, like in a fairy tale, any excursion also turns into a real pleasure.
There are four main seasons in Russia - winter, spring, summer, autumn, and conventionally, they can be compared with a different times of a day:

January - is a moderately frosty month with average monthly temperature of around -5..-7 degrees, days with temperature up to -15..-18 degrees happen rarely. The precipitation falls mainly as snow. Snow cover is permanent, daylight is short, lasts for 7-8 hours only.
Long New Year Holidays continue from 1st January to 10-11 January in Russia and it is one of the most interesting periods to visit Russia. Streets and buildings in all cities are decorating particularly interesting at this time, various events are organized, like folk festivals, souvenir sales. Christmas in Russia is celebrated on the 7th of January and it is a very festive day also.
February - is a moderately frosty month with average monthly temperature of around -6..-8 degrees, days with temperature up to -15..-18 degrees happen rarely. The precipitation falls mainly as snow. Snow cover is permanent, daylight increases up to 9-9,5 hours.
The Day of the Defender of the Homeland, the Day of military glory of Russia, which the russian troops gained on the battlefieldes, is widely and publicly celebrating in Russia on the 23rd of the February in the last decades of the century. Initially, there is a lot of meaning in this day - to love, honor and defend the Homeland, and if necessary, to be able to adequately stand up for it. And russian soldiers had to defend their homeland very often and always honorably performed their duty. Of course, special attention and importance this holiday had acquired in a connection with the victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, as that war affected in Russia absolutely each and every family. Also, in the late February or early March (dates vary from year to year) people in Russia celebrate Maslenitsa - this is the last week before Great Lent, at this time its decided to meeting each other and treating everyone pancakes. At the end of the week, on a Forgiveness Sunday, people usually burn the effigy of Maslenitsa (as a symbol of the passing winter) - and it is always a very festive and happy sensation.
March - is a slightly frosty month with average monthly temperature of around 0..-2 degrees. The precipitation falls as a snow, rarely - as a rain. Snow cover is permanent, in the last dates of month its height begins to decrease, sometimes the snow melts completely until the end of March. Daylight increases toward the end of the month to 13 hours.
In March one of the most loved holidays in Russia - 8th of March, the International Women`s Day - celebrates. On this day all men (not only family members, but also at work, in the istitutions and even at schools) present to all women lots of flowers and gifts, and passers-by can just say congratulations.
April - is a cool month with average monthly temperature of around +6..+8 degrees. The precipitation falls mainly as rain, but snow is also not excluded. Permanent snow cover melts in the first half of the month, in some places it remains until the last ten days of the month, daylight lasts for 13-15,5 hours, the awakening of nature from winter hibernation begins, the migratory birds return back to Russia.
There are no any special official holidays in this month, but in some of the years the end of the Great Lent happens in the end of the month, and the Pascha - the most important and enjoyable feast of the Russian Orthodox Church - celebrates. In this day and the following week anyone can call the church bells, everyone give each other painted eggs and festive cakes.
May - is a warm (in recent years - moderately little hot) month with average monthly temperature of around +13..+15 degrees (in recent years the average temperature of May is usually not lower then +15 degrees). The precipitation falls mainly as rain. Daylight is long, 15-16 hours, everything in nature becomes green, parks are full of flowers, and the nightingales sing magically in the evenings.
In the very first days of May the International Day of Solidarity of Workers celebrates. This are the holidays and most of the people spend this time outside of the city. This is the time when all the streets in Moscow are festively decorated and the number of cars and traffic on the roads are sharply reduced. The 9th of May - is a Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. In this day the parade takes place on the Red Square in Moscow and in other large russian cities also. Festival salutes and fireworks are organized in the evenings and usually the fountains start work in Moscow in these days. The 27th of May - is a day of the foundation of the nothern capital of Russia - Saint Petersburg. The founding of Petropavlovsk fortress on the Zayachyi island at the mouth of the Neva river by Peter I in 1703 is considered as a date of birth of the city. The city was named in honor of the Apostle Peter. Each Day of the City the annual regatta - the rowing competitions in the waters of the Grebnoi channel - is held. Also, the Baltic sea festival takes place. It is a celebration of sport and active lifestyle, the largest boat show on the water in Russia, which became the highlight not only for yachtsmen, but for all citizens who prefer the active holidays. The Day of the City in St. Petersburg is accompanied necessarily by festive music concerts, demonstration of films about the construction of St. Petersburg and russian fleet, and theatre performances.
|At the end of May school classes are ended, the summer holidays come and last until 1st of September. All the summer months are also the main holidays in Russia. Most of the aged or retired citizens of large cities live whole summer with kids out of the cities in their summer houses - cottages, and working persons run to them for the weekend. This leads to the traditional problems on the roads in the mornings and evenings on the outbound highways. For example, there are always a huge traffic jams in the capital from April to October whole Friday and Saturday`s morning at departure from Moscow, and same happens on Sunday evening and Monday morning at the entrance to Moscow. These features must be necessarily and carefully taken into account during the selection of flights and airport in Moscow.
June - is a moderately hot month with average monthly temperature of around +16..+20 degrees. The precipitation can be in the form of the rain (not daily). Daylight is long and the 22nd of June is the longest day of the year - more than 17 hours 37 minutes. And in Saint Petersburg there is a period of "White Nights" from the middle of June till the middle of July when the sunbeams (even after sunset) continue to illuminate the sky over the city during whole night.
Annually on last years on the 5-7th of June the Festival of Historical Reconstructions "Times and Eras" organize in the Museum-reserve Kolomenskoye in Moscow. There tourists can see different Historic events with people in historical dresses and everyone who wants can directly participate in it. Also in this month on the 12th of June Russia celebrates the Day of Russia (the Independence Day). This holiday appeared after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and until 2002 this festival was called as the Day of the Adoption of the Declaration of state sovereignty of Russia in the 1992. The Day of Russia is one of the "youngest" holidays in the country. In the evening there is a festive salute in Moscow. The city of Kolomna, which was founded in 1177, celebrates the Day of the City on the 12th of June too. A variety of activities, municipal authorities performances, processions and parades mark this day. The fairs and concerts featuring popular artists are held on this day, and the thunderous volleys of celebratory fireworks can be heard after the sunset.
July - is a moderately hot month with average monthly temperature of around +18..+25 degrees. The precipitation can be in the form of the rain (not daily). Daylight is long, from 17,5 hours.
There are no official holidays in this month, but numerous of different music festivals, international exhibitions and other festivities are held throughout the country. For example, the city of Suzdal celebrates the wonderful and original holiday - the Day of the Cucumber over the last several years. Every year from 15 to 17 July the city-museum under the open sky becomes the center concourse of gardeners famous for their skill and talent. The agriculturists, gardeners and professionals in their field demonstrate the best instances of personally grown cucumbers. This fun celebration of course accompanied by music concerts and festivals, trade fairs and bazaars, where guests are offered to taste sweet, saulty, fresh, marinated, fried and stewed cucumbers. Also, there is a summer slavic folk festival of pagan origin - Ivan Kupala Day, which is celebrated on 7th July and combines two elements: pagan and christian. The night before the Ivan Kupala Day surpasses in its ritual content, as it occurs a ritual cleansing, purification while swimming in open water.
August - is a moderately hot month with average monthly temperature of around +16..+20 degrees. The precipitation can be in the form of the rain (not daily). Daylight is reduced from 16 to 14,5 hours to the end of the month.
There are no official holidays in this month, but in parks and public gardens of large and small cities of the country the representatives of the various military units of Russia celebrate noisy their own holidays: on the 2nd of August - the Day of the Airborne Troops, on the 12th of August - the Day of the Air Forces and on the 22nd of August - the Day of the National Flag of Russian Federation. On these days the demostrations of the military equipment and power of Russia take place on the open areas, and followed solemnly by fireworks in the evening. And also, the great city of Suzdal celebrates the Day of the City on the 12th of August. As well as Moscow, Suzdal is a city with a long history. On this day, the cradle of the Golden Ring of the russian cities - Suzdal - is decorated with summer scenery and welcomes visitors and tourists from the most distant places of our vast country. Every year city is transformed, the large-scale festivals and concerts are organized, and the central streets are decorated with colourful flags, posters, signs. The manicured lawns and neat flowerbeds are green at these time everywhere.
September - is a still warm month with average monthly temperature of around +10..+15 degrees. The precipitation falls mainly as rain. There is no snow cover, and the daylight is reduced from 14 to 11,5 hours to the end of the month. Green leaves on the trees and bushes begin to change their colour in all shades of gold and red colours, and it is a really beautiful time in nature. Lots of birds gather in a flocks to fly to the warmer climates for the whole winter.
There are no official holidays on this month, but the first weekend of September is Moscow celebrates The Day of City. This is a very colorful festival with many concerts in the parks and processions on the streets. Also, every year in early September the International Military Music Festival - Spasskaya Bashnya (the parade of military bands) - takes place on the Red Square in Moscow.
October - is a cool month with average monthly temperature of around +5..+7 degrees. The precipitation falls mainly as rain, snow is also possible.The snow cover absents usually, sometimes (not every year) snow falls for 1-2 days. Daylight becomes noticeably shorter from 11,5 to 9,5 hours. In the last dates of the month very rarely there is possibility of ice cover on the rivers and lakes.
Each year in early October the festival Circle of Light is held in Moscow. This is a very popular and colorful show of a light installations on the various architectural and park facilities of the city.
November - is a cold (in a recent years - cool) month with average monthly temperature of around 0..-2 degrees (since the beginning of the 21st century the temperature of November is mostly positive). The precipitation falls as rain and snow. The snow cover is temporary or absent in recent years. Daylight is short, from 9,5 to 8 hours. Wildlife falls into the winter hibernation, rivers and lakes start freezing (the formation of the ice occures more rarely in late October or before the day of winter solstice in December). It is not the best time to travel to the Central part of Russia.
In the beginning of the month - on the 4th of November - there is a celebration of a Day of a National Unity, dedicated to the victory of Russian people over the Polish intervention in 1612.
It is a unique event for the history of the state. At that point, there was no centralized government in Russia, because the ruling earlier in Russia Rurik dynasty became extinct, and the richest people - boyars - discredited themselves by the agreements with the foreign invaders. In that difficult time different classes and nationalities of the russian lands united themselves under the leadership of a prince Dmitryi Pozharskyi and a merchant Kuzma Minin, collected money and troops, and went from the cities of Nizhnyi Novgorod and Yaroslavl to Moscow for a war with the invaders. As a result of the victorious battle and liberation of the moscow throne from foreigners, the Romanovy dynasty was chosen as the new ruling dynasty in Moscow.
December - is a moderately frosty (in a recent years - slightly frosty) month with average monthly temperature of around -4..-6 degrees, rarely there are days with temperature of around -12..-15 degrees. The precipitation falls mainly as snow. Snow cover is permanent, daylight is short and the 22nd of December is the shortest day of the year - 6 hours 56 minutes.
The preparing for the New Year holidays begins in December already everywhere. The streets are decorated with Christmas trees and lights, all is festively decorated in shops, and New Year`s eve is one of the brightest and most beloved holiday of Russia!
